Topic Overview: The speaker will present information on the effect of Electromagnetic Interference on railroad signal systems. It will cover track circuits which are the foundation of signal systems and discuss the impact of ground faults and steady-state inductive interference on the track circuits. There will be some information on power line designs that mitigate some of the EMI problems. As power companies and railroads are being forced more and more to share corridors, this is becoming a bigger problem. It is a lot more economical to be aware of possible problems and design to minimize rather than to mitigate after building.
